Catalytic Leadership : are you taking advantage of ALL your brains?
The changing global environment has created an opportunity for managers and leaders to take the plunge and have the courage to introduce ‘Catalytic Leadership’ to the Boardroom and more broadly to organisational culture. A catalyst can literally be defined as ‘a person acting as the stimulus in bringing about or hastening a result’ or ‘something that causes an action or event to occur – usually used in small amounts’. So a Catalytic Leader is one who triggers or accelerates the rate of change and inspires others to follow them.
“I am personally convinced that one person can be a change catalyst, a "transformer" in any situation, any organisation. Such an individual is yeast that can leaven an entire loaf. It requires vision, initiative, patience, respect, persistence, courage and faith to be a transforming leader.” Stephen R. Covey
In response, Full Potential Group has created a Catalytic Leadership model which involves the use of a ‘multi-brain’ perspective when working on leadership development, integrating intelligence on three levels:
Level 1: The Thinking Brain
Level 2: The Heart Brain
Level 3: The Infinite Brain
This is a powerfully simple tool which enables individuals to integrate thoughts, feelings and intuitive collective intelligence for improved results. Catalytic Leaders actively access all three brains, blending their approach and simultaneously integrating what is needed in the moment for the situation at hand.
LEVEL 1: Leading with the Thinking Brain
Thinking Brain Many leaders operate competently primarily with the Thinking Brain which brings both focus and perspective. But many leaders are faced with complex and challenging problems, and often a need to re-focus and simplify thinking in order to gain clarity. One technique for stimulating the Thinking Brain is to use laser questions such as “What would create an immediate breakthrough?” to cut through layers of complexity and get to the essence of a situation.
LEVEL 2: Leading with the Heart Brain
Heart Brain The Heart Brain involves feelings and emotions – tuning into feelings, igniting passion and aligning attitudes, beliefs and behaviours with corporate values to fast-track engagement and business results. The challenge for many leaders is often finding the courage to speak their truth and having the confidence to express the reality of situations when others are reluctant to comment.
LEVEL 3: Leading with the Infinite Brain
Infinite Brain The Infinite Brain taps into a wider level of consciousness and a potentially deeper level of a person’s identity and purpose, focusing on intuition and the value of the subconscious in making decisions. This is more of an ‘unknown’ domain which many leaders can find challenging to access. Pragmatic techniques such as visioning and using stories or metaphors are simple, effective ways of leading from the Infinite Brain.
A truly Catalytic Leader will have a highly developed Thinking Brain but also be able to use the Heart Brain, bringing in courage, confidence and compassion, and the Infinite Brain, bringing in intuition and low ego. A leader’s authenticity will really come across when they are completely integrating and aligning the three levels. This ability to draw from the different levels at different times is the true essence of Catalytic Leadership and when mastered, a real skill and highly transformational.
